IDYLLWILD, CA – 2/26/08 – The annual art scene is Idyllwild is poised to begin as the Art Alliance of Idyllwild prepares for the 2008 kickoff celebration. The “Eye of the Artist Art Show and Fundraiser” is the AAI's largest fundraiser of the year. The fun-filled evening offers a chance to visit with local artists, enjoy some fine refreshments and return home with a one-of-a-kind piece of original art.
The "Eye of the Artist" event is scheduled for March 8, from 7-9 PM, at the Rainbow Inn, located at 54420 South Circle Drive. As is tradition for the "Eye of the Artist", AAI galleries donate exquisite works of art, which will go to the highest bidder in a live auction hosted by MC Frank Ferro. The selections can include oil paintings, sculpture, metal, jewelry, 3-dimentional art, ceramics and basketry.
Artist members donate their own artistic creations to the "opportunity drawing," in which lucky participants can start or add to their art collections with a minimal investment. Hopeful art lovers purchase tickets to place in drawings for their favorite pieces of art. At evening's end, the winning tickets are selected.
“We’ve gotten a few pieces in already and they really look good," said event organizer Lon Mercer. “We have an original watercolor from Carol Mills, a fused glass hanging from Idyllwild Gallery of Fine Art, an earring and necklace set by Amanda Taylor and a Manzanita wine opener and bottle of wine from Steve Taylor," he added. "It should be really fun."
For each "Eye of the Artist" event, artist members base their creation on a specific theme. This year's theme is "emotions." In her donated watercolor, Idyllwild artist and gallery owner Carol Mills called upon the emotion of joy.
“It’s called ‘Pure Joy’ and it expresses the full joy that I feel, especially when I work with watercolor… the fluidity and the mystical transparency of paper when it merges with the watercolor. The basic shapes are archetypal shapes of what’s all around us all the time,” she added.
Tickets for the opportunity drawing are $2 for 1, $5 for three, $10 for 7 or $20 for 25. The more tickets you add, the greater your chance of winning but as Mercer points out, it only takes one.
“It allows the general public a chance to acquire a piece of amazing art for $2," he said. "That's inexpensive but the event provides a good deal of money to run the Art Alliance events for the rest of the year.”
The "Eye of the Artist" event is a major fundraiser for the Art Alliance, which is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization with a mission to promote art and art education. The AAI is dedicated to supporting local artists and galleries and enhancing Idyllwild's reputation as one of the 100 Best Art Towns in America.
Proceeds from the show help support AAI artist events throughout the year. Those shows include the Member's Show, the Juried Member's Show and the Plein Air Festival. The event also kicks off AAI's "First Saturdays" series, which features a noteworthy art event on the first Saturday of each month from March through October.
For a suggested donation of $5 at the door, guests will enjoy a fun filled evening, have a chance to take home some original art and help the AAI support the arts and art education in Idyllwild.
