AAI’s 10th Annual Juried Members Show This Weekend!
IDYLLWILD, CA, 6/30/08 – The countdown is on for the Art Alliance of Idyllwild’s 10th Annual Juried Members Show. The event takes place this weekend at the Rainbow Inn on South Circle Dr. The fun begins Friday evening, with a reception from 7 – 9 pm. Juror Brian Trimble, Curator of Education for the University Art Museum at California State University Long Beach, will choose the winners in the categories of photography, representational art, three-dimensional pieces and abstract works. Visiting guests and artists will cast their votes for the “Artists’ Choice” and “People’s Choice” awards.
The mediums include painting, ceramics, sculpture, jewelry, metal work, photography, furniture, fiber arts and glass. The exhibition will remain open both Saturday (July 5) and Sunday (July 6), from 11 am until 4 pm. There is no charge for the event and everyone is welcome.
Metal sculptor Dore Capitani is creating a metal sphere for the show. “I made molds that squeeze it into the radius and I assemble it in a heavy duty wok, which is actually a propane tank,” said Capitani. “They’re just a natural round shape, to me they look like big dandelion puff balls. They look cool in the yard because they have a natural look to them.”
Stuart Funk’s painting, “Monument,” is part of a series of male nudes. “I let the poses inspire surreal, dreamlike images that, like a dream, are cryptic, only partially understood and difficult to verbalize,” said Funk. “It was first painted in monochrome and the color was added in transparent glazes.”
Artist Daniel Fiddler is submitting “Dream Catcher Bowl,” a piece made of ceramic and turquoise. Fiddler is working on a series of ceramic bowls with a southwest, Native American feel. “I have always been fascinated by their belief in dreams and the dream-catcher,” said Fiddler. “I am incorporating dream catchers in some of the bowls that will be displayed as wall hangers.” 
Photographer Paul Duval’s entry is titled, "Waning Moon & Lone Pine Peak,” a photograph taken shortly after dawn at Lone Pine Creek Campground.“My black-and-white photography takes it inspiration from the work of Ansel Adams, Edward Weston and Alfred Stieglitz,” said Duval. “Idyllwild, Mt. Baldy and the Eastern Sierra are areas of great photographic potential. I was lucky enough to be there when the waning Moon set behind Lone Pine Peak.
Brenda Underwood’s watercolor “The Perfect Fishing Spot" was inspired by the sport. “Fishing is much more than casting and retrieving and playing in your catch,” Underwood said. “It's the wind on your face and the sound of waking birds as the sun peeks over the horizon. It's discovering the magic in new places and unlocking the mysteries that lurk there.”
Ying Liu will enter her 24” x 18” oil painting titled “Earl.” "I really like the glow created by the light on his face... which shows the dignity of the person," Liu said.
Terry Casella’s "Variations 2008" is made of 5 pieces of fused glass mounted on a framework of copper tubing. “I was intrigued by the wavy form for the base glass pieces so I created some patterns with the glass pieces fused onto them that complement the basic glass form,” Casella said. “The copper tubes were used to pick up some of the colors in the glass.” 
Monique Marino’s entry is an oil painting called, “What A Day," a painting based on a photograph of modern dance legend Martha Graham. “As a whimsical artist I am always drawn to things which are quirky and unconventional,” said Marino. “I fell in love with the odd positioning of Martha's body, the beautiful flow of her dress and her pained, exasperated expression.
More than 8,000 screws were used to accent the features of Daniel Aronson’s "Screwed." The mixed medium piece is made of ponderosa pine, screws and bronze. It was “inspired to make art out of a new idea and create my sculptures with a new medium,” Aronson said. 
“Cherished Moments," by Trudy Levy, is is made of low fire clay and glazes. “It’s an exploration in color, space and texture” said Levy. “The use of turquoise stones to decorate the piece adds a new dimension of texture and color.”The Art Alliance of Idyllwild is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization, which promotes art and art education. The Juried Members Show is part of the AAI’s “First Saturdays” series, which presents an interesting art event on the first Saturday of each month from March through October.
