Happy Hat

AAI’s 10th Annual Juried Members Show This Weekend!

IDYLLWILD, CA, 6/30/08 – The countdown is on for the Art Alliance of Idyllwild’s 10th Annual Juried Members Show. The event takes place this weekend at the Rainbow Inn on South Circle Dr. The fun begins Friday evening, with a reception from 7 – 9 pm. Juror Brian Trimble, Curator of Education for the University Art Museum at California State University Long Beach, will choose the winners in the categories of photography, representational art, three-dimensional pieces and abstract works. Visiting guests and artists will cast their votes for the “Artists’ Choice” and “People’s Choice” awards.

The mediums include painting, ceramics, sculpture, jewelry, metal work, photography, furniture, fiber arts and glass. The exhibition will remain open both Saturday (July 5) and Sunday (July 6), from 11 am until 4 pm. There is no charge for the event and everyone is welcome.

Metal sculptor Dore Capitani is creating a metal sphere for the show. “I made molds that squeeze it into the radius and I assemble it in a heavy duty wok, which is actually a propane tank,” said Capitani. “They’re just a natural round shape, to me they look like big dandelion puff balls. They look cool in the yard because they have a natural look to them.”

Stuart Funk’s painting, “Monument,” is part of a series of male nudes. “I let the poses inspire surreal, dreamlike images that, like a dream, are cryptic, only partially understood and difficult to verbalize,” said Funk. “It was first painted in monochrome and the color was added in transparent glazes.”

Artist Daniel Fiddler is submitting “Dream Catcher Bowl,” a piece made of ceramic and turquoise. Fiddler is working on a series of ceramic bowls with a southwest, Native American feel. “I have always been fascinated by their belief in dreams and the dream-catcher,” said Fiddler. “I am incorporating dream catchers in some of the bowls that will be displayed as wall hangers.”

Photographer Paul Duval’s entry is titled, "Waning Moon & Lone Pine Peak,” a photograph taken shortly after dawn at Lone Pine Creek Campground.

“My black-and-white photography takes it inspiration from the work of Ansel Adams, Edward Weston and Alfred Stieglitz,” said Duval. “Idyllwild, Mt. Baldy and the Eastern Sierra are areas of great photographic potential. I was lucky enough to be there when the waning Moon set behind Lone Pine Peak.

Brenda Underwood’s watercolor “The Perfect Fishing Spot" was inspired by the sport. “Fishing is much more than casting and retrieving and playing in your catch,” Underwood said. “It's the wind on your face and the sound of waking birds as the sun peeks over the horizon. It's discovering the magic in new places and unlocking the mysteries that lurk there.”

Ying Liu will enter her 24” x 18” oil painting titled “Earl.” "I really like the glow created by the light on his face... which shows the dignity of the person," Liu said.

Terry Casella’s "Variations 2008" is made of 5 pieces of fused glass mounted on a framework of copper tubing. “I was intrigued by the wavy form for the base glass pieces so I created some patterns with the glass pieces fused onto them that complement the basic glass form,” Casella said. “The copper tubes were used to pick up some of the colors in the glass.”

Monique Marino’s entry is an oil painting called, “What A Day," a painting based on a photograph of modern dance legend Martha Graham. “As a whimsical artist I am always drawn to things which are quirky and unconventional,” said Marino. “I fell in love with the odd positioning of Martha's body, the beautiful flow of her dress and her pained, exasperated expression.

More than 8,000 screws were used to accent the features of Daniel Aronson’s "Screwed." The mixed medium piece is made of ponderosa pine, screws and bronze. It was “inspired to make art out of a new idea and create my sculptures with a new medium,” Aronson said.

“Cherished Moments," by Trudy Levy, is is made of low fire clay and glazes. “It’s an exploration in color, space and texture” said Levy. “The use of turquoise stones to decorate the piece adds a new dimension of texture and color.”

Juried Members Show July 4-6, 2008

"Two Doors Down"
Art work by Darcy Gerdes, 16x20" acrylic

IDYLLWILD, CA, 6/23/08 – Artists in Idyllwild will put their artwork to the test next month at the Art Alliance of Idyllwild’s 10th Annual Juried Members Show. A Friday evening reception (7-9 PM) on July 4 kicks off the festivities at the Rainbow Inn on South Circle Dr. The fun continues, with an open exhibition Saturday and Sunday (July 5-6) from 11 am – 4 pm. The event is free to the public and everyone is welcome.

AAI’s artist members will present their work to juror Brian Trimble, Curator of Education for the University Art Museum at California State University Long Beach. Trimble will choose the best of photography, representational art, three-dimensional pieces and abstract works. Those on hand will vote for the “Artists’ Choice” and “People’s Choice” awards.

The artists may choose from a variety of medium, including painting, ceramics, sculpture, jewelry, metal work, photography, furniture and fiber arts.

Award-winning sculptor and art educator Norm Deesing, known for his high-fire clay figures, will
be submitting “Nova,” the first sculpture of his new “Star Series” collection. “Although the figures in this piece are easily recognizable as women, the intent behind it is to visualize the gravitational pull of two separate stars,” Deesing said. “This ‘gravity dance’ will eventually fuse the two stars into one. It’s sort of a cosmic love story.”

Painter Kathleen Keifer is submitting a landscape that depicts Highway 74, a beautiful back road to the desert where the old television show Bonanza was filmed.

“When you’re a kid growing up on the flat plains of the Midwest, and the highest object on the horizon is a water tank, mountains seem a little surreal,” said Keifer. “T.V. shows like Bonanza, with its backdrop of Ponderosa Pines and mountains (instead of cornfields, housing tracts, and water tanks) did not seem real-just smoke and mirrors-nothing could be that beautiful.”

AAI artist Bob Schraff is putting the finishing touches on an art table he will enter into the competition. Schraff uses his formal training in architecture, engineering and graphic design to create award-winning tables from metal and glass. Each contemporary complex metal sculpture is topped by clear glass, adding a sharp contrast, which results in a memorable work of art.

Artist Joann Tomshe is entering “Forest Memories.” “I was thinking of the underlying aspects life that seem more permanent and stable, and how they contrast and provide support for those more fragile elements undergoing change, shifts, and decay,” said Tomsche. “Nothing is permanent – these colors will fade, these twigs will snap – but as in life, beauty will remain.”

The Juried Members Show is part of the Art Alliance of Idyllwild’s “First Saturdays” series, which hosts a noteworthy art event on the first Saturday of each month from March through October. The AAI’s mission is to promote local artists and galleries as well as enhance the town’s reputation as one of the “100 Best Art Towns in America,” as dubbed by artist and author John Villani.

Art with Theatre! Colony Theatre

Special Invite: Show up in Burbank
Colony Theatre
June 18-July 27 2008

THE VOICEOF THE PRAIRIEBy John Olive
Directed by David Rose

Before talk radio,
Before shock jocks,
Before Garrison Keillor,
There was country boy
Davey Quinn.

From the artistic shores of Laguna Beach to the art colony in Idyllwild, CA., Darcy Gerdes has enjoyed a professional art career for over 25 years. Recently, her wildlife & landscapes were discovered thru the artist’s website at flyingpigmentstudio.com by the Colony Theatre in beautiful downtown Burbank, CA by art gallery curator, Jude Walder. Her artwork has been selected as part of the gallery exhibition for “The Voice of the Prairie” a John Olive play production, scheduled to run from June18th to July 27th. In addition to her finished subjects, Darcy was inspired to paint nine new pieces of the Midwest prairie, featuring fields of grain against a blue sky filled with wispy clouds. “Nature always inspires me,” explained Darcy, “and I identified with the lead character, Davey Quinn.” He discovers storytelling as I have discovered art. Growing up in Anaheim, surrounded by strawberry fields, just as he grew up looking at acres of grain waving in the wind.

The play captures the beginning stages of radio storytelling in the heartland of America during the 1920s. Before talk radio, before shock jocks, before Garrison Keillor, there was country boy Davey Quinn. Davey’s special storytelling grabs the ear of an early radio hustler who puts him on the air – and a star is born. Quinn’s homespun yarns become a hit with the hearts of America, including one whose childhood memories are mysteriously stirred to life. An epic adventure of young love and redemption – with 3 actors playing more than 20 roles – that will enchant the entire family.

Darcy’s art career has included juried art, commissions and licensed art, but this is her first venture into theater gallery exbitions. Her paintings will be featured with a showing as theater subscribers enjoy cocktails, buffet, meet the artist and enjoy the pre-show debut. Come to the Colony Theater, and enjoy Darcy’s artistry inside the dramatic art of the play.

A SPECIAL NOTE FROM ARTISTIC DIRECTOR BARBARA BECKLEY

Welcome to our 34th Anniversary Season! Our first production of the season is John Olive's The Voice of the Prairie, a uniquely American story that is rooted in midwestern tradition and history, and I want to share with you why we are so excited to bring you this play. .

The Voice of the Prairie is set in the 1920s during the birth of radio, and within 10 years of the play, the radio had changed the world. This sounds like such a long time ago, but the reality is that we all know what it's like to have new technology impact our lives. With the creation and evolution of the internet -- which is still unregulated, just as the early days of radio were -- we are experiencing our own technological revolution that is changing our world on a daily basis.

But this play isn't just about technology; it's also about storytelling. The character David Quinn shares the captivating stories of his youth to an ever-growing radio audience, and as human beings, there's something in our DNA that compels us to respond to a well-told story. As it is written, The Voice of the Prairie cannot be presented as a television show or a movie. It is a uniquely theatrical event where 3 extremely talented actors play more than 20 roles, and this theatricality makes it especially exciting to produce and share. The Voice of the Prairie is unlike anything The Colony has ever done, and I hope you enjoy it.

Warm regards,
Barbara Beckley
