Lift Your Glasses For…

IDYLLWILD, CA, 9/23/08 – Each year, on the first Saturday in October, lovers of art, music and fine wine gather in the mile-high town of Idyllwild to celebrate their passions. This year’s festivities mark the 11th year of the tradition that is the Art Alliance of Idyllwild’s Annual Art Walk and Wine Tasting.

The event was thought up by local gallery owners, in an effort to draw art Lovers to Idyllwild. It has evolved into one of the most celebrated events of the year.
“It is our largest event of the year and promises to be a spectacular one,” said AAI President Lon Mercer. “We will have representatives from wineries who belong to the Temecula Valley Winegrowers Association placed at all of our gallery locations.”

This year’s Art Walk takes place on Saturday, October 4. Meet at the town center at 2pm to pick up the commemorative wine glass that serves as your ticket. Then, spend the next three hours wandering through the alpine village, enjoying the scent of pine and cedar that helps set the tone for the day. You may want to take advantage of the complimentary shuttle that stops along the gallery route.

Representatives from nearly 20 wineries will be on hand to delight visitors with their new releases and some old favorites. Wineglasses can be purchased online, through the Idyllwild Town Crier web site, for $25.

The Art Walk is the year’s finale of the Art Alliance’s “First Saturdays” series, which presents an interesting art event on the first Saturday of each month from March through October. Proceeds from the event support arts education in Idyllwild. The Art Walk helps fund the smARTS program at Idyllwild School and also goes toward scholarships at the Idyllwild Arts Academy.

AAI galleries go all out in presenting exclusive art displays of painting, sculpture, glass art and more.
The artist members of Idyllwild’s Courtyard Gallery welcome artist Nel Ivancich, of Pinyon Crest, CA. At times, her work captures the essence of the wilderness area of the Santa Rosa Mountains, where she lives. Other times, her paintings ponder the mysteries of the universe.
“A few of my paintings relate to the possibility of unfolding mysteries gleaned from the Hadron Collider,” said Ivancich. “At this stage of my life, it doesn't take much to excite my curiosities.”

Courtyard visitors will view her exhibit, "Above, Below, Beyond " while listening to the lively sounds of "Rumble Chicken." The members of this popular group are: Sue Parker, Pete Holzman, and Alex Watson.

Up the street, the Keifer Gallery and Cafe Aroma will host a wine tasting in Keifer Gallery courtyard. The gallery will feature wine still life paintings of Thomas Arvid along with Clifford Bailey and owners Kathleen and Jim Keifer. The Keifers will also host a trunk show of acclaimed Los Angeles jewelry artist Linda Kail. The fun continues into the evening with an art exhibit with the theme, "Wine, Women, and Song."

At Artisans Gallery, owner/artist Steve Taylor will display work that illustrates his love of wood, a trait Taylor says he inherited from his father who was a fine woodworker. Taylor crafts gnarled manzanita into items like corkscrews, bottle stoppers, candleholders, and clocks. He shows the unique qualities of the wood by slicing it open to reveal its deep red core.

Musician Lois Sheppard will serenade guests with her recorder, playing the perfect variety of music to set the mood for fun.

At Flying Pigment Studio Gallery, AAI member artists, including artist/owner Darcy Gerdes, Kathleen Chaney, Dore Capitani, Carol Rice, Jan Jaspers-Fayer and Marcia Cox. The artists will show new work in acrylics, oil, photography, raku, bronze and art rocks. The eclectic mountain boutique gallery features an outdoor art garden and a work patio where you’re likely to find one of the artists at work.
The Idyllwild Gallery of Fine Art welcomes glass artist Mark Hines for a special presentation of all new work entitled “Finishing Touches.” A self-taught fused glass artist, Hines’ work has been featured in Architectural Digest, selected by Henredon Furniture and sought after by furniture and fabric designer Marge Carson. At the Art Walk, Hines will introduce his new collection of vases, wall pieces and candleholders.

Art in the Outdoors at Flying Pigment Studio Art Garden

Art in the Outdoors – Art Alliance of Idyllwild’s 2008 Plein Air Art Fest

IDYLLWILD, CA, 8/27/08 – In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, before the advent of color film, Plein Air painters used lively brush strokes and a vivid portrayal of light to capture a colorful moment in time. During the first weekend of September, artists will carry on the Plein Air tradition with the Art Alliance of Idyllwild’s 2008 Plein Air Art Festival.

The 3-day event begins Friday evening, September 5th, with a panel discussion featuring prominent artists. The Quiet Creek Inn, located at 26345 Delano Rd., will host the event.

On Saturday, peer over the shoulders of nearly 30 participating Art Alliance artists as they capture the town’s spectacular mountain vistas and pastoral forest settings with their paintings, drawings and sculptures.

“I think a lot of the excitement of Plein Air is that people aren’t used to seeing artists at work,” said AAI artist Jim Keifer, of Keifer Gallery. “It’s a little bit of magic and always draws a crowd.”

“The thing about Plein Air is that it is really challenging,” said Elena Kern, AAI artist and owner of Four Corners Fine Art Gallery. “You have to fight the elements. Sometimes the wind will come along and pick up your canvas and you have to go chase it. Sometimes a bug will crawl onto your painting and get stuck. Then there’s the constant changing of light.“

Plein Air is French for “open air” and it’s straightforward approach to painting calls for quick and accurate observation and the ability to quickly express that image on canvas.

“It’s basically drawing with the paintbrush,” said Keifer. “When you go out in nature there’s so much there, you can’t paint it all. You don’t paint exactly what you see. You capture the essence of it.”

“To sit in your studio and have time to make corrections and fine tune, that’s one thing,” Kern said. “But when you’re outdoors and you have changing light and changing shadows it’s difficult to capture what you’re looking at in just a few quick brush strokes.”

The artists will be working in various parts of town, providing a chance to wander and explore the lovely town that ranks among the “Top 100 Art Towns in America.” Pick up a map of the artists’ locations at the Village Centre Gazebo and watch them work from 8 am until 3 pm.

Look for artist Irene Corey in the art garden of Flying Pigment Studio Gallery. Her superb work is influenced by her deep appreciation of the folk arts of Mexico she developed while living in Guadalajara.

”My landscapes are intended to draw the viewer into the scene and experience the elements with all the senses,” said Corey. “In painting people I hope to arouse a curiosity as to who they are… their thoughts and experiences.”

Artist Cindy Triplett will be on hand at Artisans Gallery, in Oakwood Village. Triplett crafts her colorful landscape painting in a loose and spontaneous style, achieving a radiance with her use of color to portray light and space.

“I find watercolor paint to be both transparent and brilliant,” said Triplett. “For me, the medium is very suitable for expressing shapes, shifting atmospheric changes and the illusions of water.”

The artwork will be evaluated by juror Risë Parberry, a San Diego artist and former art educator who is a juried signature member of the Northwest and San Diego Watercolor Societies. Then, on Sunday morning, from 10am until noon, the festivities continue with a reception, sponsored by Guaranty Bank, at the Courtyard Building at 26120 Ridgeview Dr. Winners will be announced and the completed artworks, which were created before your eyes, will be made available for purchase.

The 2008 Plein Air Art Festival, sponsored by Hemet Ophthalmologist William Kern, is part of the AAI’s First Saturday’s series, which offers a key art event on the first Saturday of each month from March through October. The Art Alliance is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization with a mission to support art and art education while promoting local galleries and artists.
