Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving to families, friends, clients and vistors!
"Autum Respite"
18x24" acrylic
Ah! on Thanksgiving day, when from East and from West, From North and South, come the pilgrim and guest,When the gray-haired New Englander sees round his board,The old broken links of affection restored,When the care-wearied man seeks his mother once more,And the worn matron smiles where the girl smiled before,What moistens the lips and what brightens the eye? What calls back the past, like the rich pumpking pie?
""The Pumpkin""

"Art is a Pigment Of Your Imagination"

Although she grew up in the shadows of Disneyland, Darcy Gerdes didn't have to "wish upon a star" to make her dreams come true. The self-taught artist has built a thriving career from her artistic passions... She began drawing & doodling at an early age and by 5, Darcy could be found selling caricatures of her neighbors for nickel each...In the past, selected pieces of Darcy's multi-media works were available in prints, puzzles, cards, cross stitch & magnets, from such notable publishers as Figi Graphics, Leanin Tree Cards, Leisure Arts, Dimensions, Art in Motion and her own Flying Pigment Studio...Armed with such a unlimited source of inspiration, Darcy says she "has no one favorite subject to paint...each idea, each concept seems to want a life of their own...each design stands on its own merits...I learn from each piece"...Darcy now favors watercolors, acrylics and color pencil. "I've always felt the subject suggests the type of medium to use, which I think naturally changes my style slightly. The limitations or quality of the mediums chosen can also make a difference"...Darcy's only formal training was in high school, where she took as many art classes as she could and studied under a "most excellent teacher", Mrs. Adele Mason. She did however pay particular attention to her neighbor, Ken Southworth , an incredibly ingenious animator...Along with personal success she says her greatest rewards come from the way folks react to my art..."I love to see a perceptive knowing smile or chuckle! :}Darcy is very active in the local art scene of Idyllwild, CA. and does take special pride of showing her award winning works in the past as a juried artist at Art A Fair, Laguna Beach, CA..In October 06, She opened her own gallery, Flying Pigment Studio Gallery located in midtown Idyllwild, CA. The gallery is also a "member gallery" with Art Alliance of Idyllwild and partakes in all the events from March to October...Endowed with innate talent and amazing eye for detail, a wonderfully humorous approach to every day events, Darcy shouldn't lose her appeal either...

A simple story..been thinking about friends

Dear Visitors:

I had to share this story!!! This is written by my friend,
Janice Toepfer... A Goddess & Road Diva.

Recently at the gallery we all met up for the art wine and walk, Oct 4th.
She is the keeper of "Crow Spirit", a portrait of her 1949 WL Flathead Harley, a giclee, see below .. Enjoy! as i did..she surprised me with the story..such a talent to paint with words..
I met her when I was 17 years old.

It is nearly Halloween. Darcy reminded me that we met on Halloween night many years ago at a wild party in Orange, California. We were so untamed then. Sexuality and drunkenness intensified as the night wore on. We were all in love with someone and our masks and costumes and the pagan night turned it to fire.

We lived at Lane’s house. People everywhere. Women moving in and out. Harleys and parties and youth. If life is an oyster, we were truly living in a bed of it.

Growing up passed slowly with friends peeling off, marriages and children, jobs and responsibility. The acquisition years of homes and cars and bank accounts were demanding times and we saw little of one another, but the threads still held together and news of one another seem to always reach the group.

When Ron died, everyone was again present. This seem to me a pivotal moment and I am unsure why. Maybe he represented everything we all had endured silently. Drugs, infidelity, divorce, cancer…all of this on the tail of an incredible and very short life.

Afterwards, we all returned to our respected corners and lived on. Threads still holding us together and life moving ever so slowly forward.

In the last few years as children have grown and gone, threads got pulled into the fabric of our friendship and we see more of one another. We have bike runs together and parties at Bill’s house and the stories of our friendship are told to the curious new friends we have gathered in our circle. I hear this story told every time. Darcy told it last week to Rick’s new girlfriend who marveled at our connection. “Yes, I met Janice on Halloween night many years ago….” It is our story and we love saying the words that mean so much to us.

Darcy is a skilled artist whose friendship I value greatly. We are connected by dragons now too. She is the keeper of the secret side of all of us that is not shared with the group. She is Pisces and to be a Piscean ‘is to have an instinctive, unerring sense of the possible - and the impossible. It is to amble easily around the border territory between the two states and make magic happen as a result. If you want more success, the secret is simple. Ignore those critics who are too stupid to appreciate the breadth of your vision.’ This is who Darcy is and this is reflected in her art. She is also a woman of great beauty and passion and whom all secrets are safe.

Lift Your Glasses For…

IDYLLWILD, CA, 9/23/08 – Each year, on the first Saturday in October, lovers of art, music and fine wine gather in the mile-high town of Idyllwild to celebrate their passions. This year’s festivities mark the 11th year of the tradition that is the Art Alliance of Idyllwild’s Annual Art Walk and Wine Tasting.

The event was thought up by local gallery owners, in an effort to draw art Lovers to Idyllwild. It has evolved into one of the most celebrated events of the year.
“It is our largest event of the year and promises to be a spectacular one,” said AAI President Lon Mercer. “We will have representatives from wineries who belong to the Temecula Valley Winegrowers Association placed at all of our gallery locations.”

This year’s Art Walk takes place on Saturday, October 4. Meet at the town center at 2pm to pick up the commemorative wine glass that serves as your ticket. Then, spend the next three hours wandering through the alpine village, enjoying the scent of pine and cedar that helps set the tone for the day. You may want to take advantage of the complimentary shuttle that stops along the gallery route.

Representatives from nearly 20 wineries will be on hand to delight visitors with their new releases and some old favorites. Wineglasses can be purchased online, through the Idyllwild Town Crier web site, for $25.

The Art Walk is the year’s finale of the Art Alliance’s “First Saturdays” series, which presents an interesting art event on the first Saturday of each month from March through October. Proceeds from the event support arts education in Idyllwild. The Art Walk helps fund the smARTS program at Idyllwild School and also goes toward scholarships at the Idyllwild Arts Academy.

AAI galleries go all out in presenting exclusive art displays of painting, sculpture, glass art and more.
The artist members of Idyllwild’s Courtyard Gallery welcome artist Nel Ivancich, of Pinyon Crest, CA. At times, her work captures the essence of the wilderness area of the Santa Rosa Mountains, where she lives. Other times, her paintings ponder the mysteries of the universe.
“A few of my paintings relate to the possibility of unfolding mysteries gleaned from the Hadron Collider,” said Ivancich. “At this stage of my life, it doesn't take much to excite my curiosities.”

Courtyard visitors will view her exhibit, "Above, Below, Beyond " while listening to the lively sounds of "Rumble Chicken." The members of this popular group are: Sue Parker, Pete Holzman, and Alex Watson.

Up the street, the Keifer Gallery and Cafe Aroma will host a wine tasting in Keifer Gallery courtyard. The gallery will feature wine still life paintings of Thomas Arvid along with Clifford Bailey and owners Kathleen and Jim Keifer. The Keifers will also host a trunk show of acclaimed Los Angeles jewelry artist Linda Kail. The fun continues into the evening with an art exhibit with the theme, "Wine, Women, and Song."

At Artisans Gallery, owner/artist Steve Taylor will display work that illustrates his love of wood, a trait Taylor says he inherited from his father who was a fine woodworker. Taylor crafts gnarled manzanita into items like corkscrews, bottle stoppers, candleholders, and clocks. He shows the unique qualities of the wood by slicing it open to reveal its deep red core.

Musician Lois Sheppard will serenade guests with her recorder, playing the perfect variety of music to set the mood for fun.

At Flying Pigment Studio Gallery, AAI member artists, including artist/owner Darcy Gerdes, Kathleen Chaney, Dore Capitani, Carol Rice, Jan Jaspers-Fayer and Marcia Cox. The artists will show new work in acrylics, oil, photography, raku, bronze and art rocks. The eclectic mountain boutique gallery features an outdoor art garden and a work patio where you’re likely to find one of the artists at work.
The Idyllwild Gallery of Fine Art welcomes glass artist Mark Hines for a special presentation of all new work entitled “Finishing Touches.” A self-taught fused glass artist, Hines’ work has been featured in Architectural Digest, selected by Henredon Furniture and sought after by furniture and fabric designer Marge Carson. At the Art Walk, Hines will introduce his new collection of vases, wall pieces and candleholders.

Art in the Outdoors at Flying Pigment Studio Art Garden

Art in the Outdoors – Art Alliance of Idyllwild’s 2008 Plein Air Art Fest

IDYLLWILD, CA, 8/27/08 – In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, before the advent of color film, Plein Air painters used lively brush strokes and a vivid portrayal of light to capture a colorful moment in time. During the first weekend of September, artists will carry on the Plein Air tradition with the Art Alliance of Idyllwild’s 2008 Plein Air Art Festival.

The 3-day event begins Friday evening, September 5th, with a panel discussion featuring prominent artists. The Quiet Creek Inn, located at 26345 Delano Rd., will host the event.

On Saturday, peer over the shoulders of nearly 30 participating Art Alliance artists as they capture the town’s spectacular mountain vistas and pastoral forest settings with their paintings, drawings and sculptures.

“I think a lot of the excitement of Plein Air is that people aren’t used to seeing artists at work,” said AAI artist Jim Keifer, of Keifer Gallery. “It’s a little bit of magic and always draws a crowd.”

“The thing about Plein Air is that it is really challenging,” said Elena Kern, AAI artist and owner of Four Corners Fine Art Gallery. “You have to fight the elements. Sometimes the wind will come along and pick up your canvas and you have to go chase it. Sometimes a bug will crawl onto your painting and get stuck. Then there’s the constant changing of light.“

Plein Air is French for “open air” and it’s straightforward approach to painting calls for quick and accurate observation and the ability to quickly express that image on canvas.

“It’s basically drawing with the paintbrush,” said Keifer. “When you go out in nature there’s so much there, you can’t paint it all. You don’t paint exactly what you see. You capture the essence of it.”

“To sit in your studio and have time to make corrections and fine tune, that’s one thing,” Kern said. “But when you’re outdoors and you have changing light and changing shadows it’s difficult to capture what you’re looking at in just a few quick brush strokes.”

The artists will be working in various parts of town, providing a chance to wander and explore the lovely town that ranks among the “Top 100 Art Towns in America.” Pick up a map of the artists’ locations at the Village Centre Gazebo and watch them work from 8 am until 3 pm.

Look for artist Irene Corey in the art garden of Flying Pigment Studio Gallery. Her superb work is influenced by her deep appreciation of the folk arts of Mexico she developed while living in Guadalajara.

”My landscapes are intended to draw the viewer into the scene and experience the elements with all the senses,” said Corey. “In painting people I hope to arouse a curiosity as to who they are… their thoughts and experiences.”

Artist Cindy Triplett will be on hand at Artisans Gallery, in Oakwood Village. Triplett crafts her colorful landscape painting in a loose and spontaneous style, achieving a radiance with her use of color to portray light and space.

“I find watercolor paint to be both transparent and brilliant,” said Triplett. “For me, the medium is very suitable for expressing shapes, shifting atmospheric changes and the illusions of water.”

The artwork will be evaluated by juror Risë Parberry, a San Diego artist and former art educator who is a juried signature member of the Northwest and San Diego Watercolor Societies. Then, on Sunday morning, from 10am until noon, the festivities continue with a reception, sponsored by Guaranty Bank, at the Courtyard Building at 26120 Ridgeview Dr. Winners will be announced and the completed artworks, which were created before your eyes, will be made available for purchase.

The 2008 Plein Air Art Festival, sponsored by Hemet Ophthalmologist William Kern, is part of the AAI’s First Saturday’s series, which offers a key art event on the first Saturday of each month from March through October. The Art Alliance is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization with a mission to support art and art education while promoting local galleries and artists. For more information about the Plein Air Art Festival or the Alliance of Idyllwild, please call 877.439.5278 or visit the AAI web site:

ABOUT IRENE COREY
irene, self portrait

Irene Corey artist statement
http://www.irenecorey.com/

Though my subjects are diverse, my style is identifiable in all my paintings. I respect order in design as well as in nature. My shapes are usually bold and the colors clean.

I admire the works of various other artists but can only be true to my own nature and never try to imitate. If I work from a photo it is one I took myself, my own inspiration, subject and composition. I consider copying from any other work plagiarism.

My landscapes are intended to draw the viewer into the scene and experience the elements with all the senses.

In painting people I hope to arouse a curiosity as to who they are, their thoughts and experiences.

Even my organic still lifes may reveal something of the nature of another species.

I enjoy painting in oil but regret that I do not have the space or equipment to play in more experimental media.

Artist Bio

Irene Corey was born in a small town in Ohio a very long time ago. Have a thirst for adventure?? Head to the AAI Treasure Hunt!!

OUR CLUE:

"Who are our art treasures, that are a great measure of visual pleasure?"

Stop by the gallery to get the answer!

IDYLLWILD, CA, 7/25/08 – If it’s treasure you’re seeking, a bounty awaits in the mountain village of Idyllwild. Artists and gallery owners are gearing up for the Art Alliance of Idyllwild’s Annual Art Treasure Hunt and Gallery Walk. You hold the map to the treasure as you search for clues scattered throughout each of AAI’s 16 member galleries. Chart the answers on your treasure map for a chance to win some prized booty.

The Treasure Hunt takes place on Saturday, August 2, from noon until 4pm. The event is part of the Art Alliance’s First Saturday’s series, which presents a noteworthy art event on the first Saturday of each month from March through October. Pick up your treasure map at the Village Centre Plaza gazebo. A map will cost you $3 or grab two for $5.

Enjoy a refreshing walk through the pines, stopping to uncover clues and enjoy some tasty refreshments at each AAI gallery. Or, hop aboard a complimentary shuttle that will carry you along the gallery route. Bring your completed maps back to the gazebo by 4:00, in time for the 4:30 pm drawing. Be sure to stick around… winners must be present to collect their prizes.

The Grand Prize is an “Art Walk and Wine Tasting Weekend” for two at the Quiet Creek Inn, a delicious lunch at Café Aroma, tickets to the Art Alliance’s Art Walk and Wine Tasting event and a gift basket of wine related goodies. This year’s event takes place October 4. Other treasured prizes include gift certificates and works of art. There is even a gift basket of art supplies that will be offered as a prize for kids.

Whether you’re seeking treasure or simply looking for some fine, original pieces to enhance your art collection, the AAI’s Treasure Hunt and Gallery Walk offers something for all. Enjoy exquisite creations in a wide range of mediums including painting, sculpture, photography, jewelry, glass art, furniture, fiber arts and ceramics.

Local artist Rachel Welch is the artist in residence at Café Aroma. The bistro displays several of Welch’s creations including the acrylic on canvas El Presidente.

“I wanted to show the pride of a man who works seven days a week and takes heart in his role at the restaurant,” said Welch. “I think he was flattered and also a little embarrassed that I choose him to paint.”

Everitt’s Minerals and gallery presents gourd art sculptures by Brigitte Lopez as well as hand carved, museum-quality flutes by her husband Mac. The Macs’ creations are frequently found in Native American collector shows in Arizona.

The Idyllwild Gallery of Fine Art welcomes James Aarons and his presentation of Drawn Lines. Aarons won Best of Show in last year’s Art Alliance Members’ Show. His dual career as a dancer offers an infusion of movement and energy to Aarons’ work.

“I have always found dancing and the making of pottery to be kindred-spirited art forms,” said Aarons. “Each has been a very physical experience for me. In my years as a dancer I discovered the value that abstract gesture and form holds and I try to represent that value in my ceramic pieces.”

The featured artist at Florist in the Forest and Gallery is Ed Bucher, with his whimsical metal creations. A World War II veteran, Bucher is enjoying his retirement by creating and sharing curious artistic critters made from garden tools, bike parts, scrap metal, and an assortment of other salvaged materials. Bucher’s latest creation is a “scrap metal angel.”

Flying Pigment Studio features original acrylics, giclees and prints by owner/artist Darcy Gerdes, art rocks by Kathleen Chaney, metal sculptures by Dore Capitani and hand-painted cards and jewelry by Sherry Chaney. The Gallery also proudly displays local images by photographer Carol Rice, bronze works and oils by Jan Jaspers-Fayer, Raku and Bronze by Marcia Cox and ceramics by Robin Latimer.

AAI’s 10th Annual Juried Members Show This Weekend!

IDYLLWILD, CA, 6/30/08 – The countdown is on for the Art Alliance of Idyllwild’s 10th Annual Juried Members Show. The event takes place this weekend at the Rainbow Inn on South Circle Dr. The fun begins Friday evening, with a reception from 7 – 9 pm. Juror Brian Trimble, Curator of Education for the University Art Museum at California State University Long Beach, will choose the winners in the categories of photography, representational art, three-dimensional pieces and abstract works. Visiting guests and artists will cast their votes for the “Artists’ Choice” and “People’s Choice” awards.

The mediums include painting, ceramics, sculpture, jewelry, metal work, photography, furniture, fiber arts and glass. The exhibition will remain open both Saturday (July 5) and Sunday (July 6), from 11 am until 4 pm. There is no charge for the event and everyone is welcome.

Metal sculptor Dore Capitani is creating a metal sphere for the show. “I made molds that squeeze it into the radius and I assemble it in a heavy duty wok, which is actually a propane tank,” said Capitani. “They’re just a natural round shape, to me they look like big dandelion puff balls. They look cool in the yard because they have a natural look to them.”

Stuart Funk’s painting, “Monument,” is part of a series of male nudes. “I let the poses inspire surreal, dreamlike images that, like a dream, are cryptic, only partially understood and difficult to verbalize,” said Funk. “It was first painted in monochrome and the color was added in transparent glazes.”

Artist Daniel Fiddler is submitting “Dream Catcher Bowl,” a piece made of ceramic and turquoise. Fiddler is working on a series of ceramic bowls with a southwest, Native American feel. “I have always been fascinated by their belief in dreams and the dream-catcher,” said Fiddler. “I am incorporating dream catchers in some of the bowls that will be displayed as wall hangers.”

Photographer Paul Duval’s entry is titled, "Waning Moon & Lone Pine Peak,” a photograph taken shortly after dawn at Lone Pine Creek Campground.

“My black-and-white photography takes it inspiration from the work of Ansel Adams, Edward Weston and Alfred Stieglitz,” said Duval. “Idyllwild, Mt. Baldy and the Eastern Sierra are areas of great photographic potential. I was lucky enough to be there when the waning Moon set behind Lone Pine Peak.

Brenda Underwood’s watercolor “The Perfect Fishing Spot" was inspired by the sport. “Fishing is much more than casting and retrieving and playing in your catch,” Underwood said. “It's the wind on your face and the sound of waking birds as the sun peeks over the horizon. It's discovering the magic in new places and unlocking the mysteries that lurk there.”

Ying Liu will enter her 24” x 18” oil painting titled “Earl.” "I really like the glow created by the light on his face... which shows the dignity of the person," Liu said.

Terry Casella’s "Variations 2008" is made of 5 pieces of fused glass mounted on a framework of copper tubing. “I was intrigued by the wavy form for the base glass pieces so I created some patterns with the glass pieces fused onto them that complement the basic glass form,” Casella said. “The copper tubes were used to pick up some of the colors in the glass.”

Monique Marino’s entry is an oil painting called, “What A Day," a painting based on a photograph of modern dance legend Martha Graham. “As a whimsical artist I am always drawn to things which are quirky and unconventional,” said Marino. “I fell in love with the odd positioning of Martha's body, the beautiful flow of her dress and her pained, exasperated expression.

More than 8,000 screws were used to accent the features of Daniel Aronson’s "Screwed." The mixed medium piece is made of ponderosa pine, screws and bronze. It was “inspired to make art out of a new idea and create my sculptures with a new medium,” Aronson said.

“Cherished Moments," by Trudy Levy, is is made of low fire clay and glazes. “It’s an exploration in color, space and texture” said Levy. “The use of turquoise stones to decorate the piece adds a new dimension of texture and color.”
